FILM REVIEW

The purpose of writing a film review is same as of book review. Film review analyse the effectiveness of the plot, theme, acting, direction, special effects, musical effects, cinematography and all other elements that created the movie.

i.                     The first step in writing the review is to watch the movie without any distraction. Watching the film second time helps to get lot more details about the movie. Most film reviewers take note as they watch the movie.

ii.                   The second step is to evaluate the movie. It is like giving an opinion about the movie. The reviewer should also give impartial details and allow the views to make their own mind.

iii.                  Express your opinion of the film. If you are offended or disappointed provide a valid reason. A film review that comes across as a personal attack on an actor, director or screen writer or about a genre is a failed review.

iv.                 The next step is to know and consider the audience. Writing a movie review for children require a different approach than writing a review for other type of movies.

v.                   The report should be given based on the actors that matters for the audience.

vi.                 Revelation of key plot and points should be avoided. It is a sign of professionalism to refrain from giving such information.

vii.                Giving the outline of the movie will help the audience to watch the movie. Be sure that you don’t mention the surprise element or the ending of the movie.

viii.              Answer these questions: Who are the actors? How well they have acted?

ix.                 Judge the story: Are the characters justified and their motives plausible? Is there an internal consistence to the way each person behaves or do action of thought proves false? Does the plot make sense? Is the story true? Logical?

x.                   Rate the actors – Do they meet the expectation dictated by the plot and other story elements. What have the performers, the screen writer or the film maker have done differently to make the movie better?

xi.                 Did the movie follow a regular predictable story or is it illogical?

xii.                Details about how well the movie was shot and directed.

xiii.              Evaluate technical elements – how do the cinematography, editing, lighting, sound and other components support or detract the film. Is the music appropriate and effectively employed?

xiv.              Go through the review before it is published.
