THE DAY MY WORLD CHANGED by Malala Yousafzai
“The Day My World Changed” is a prologue to Malala’s autobiographical work, “I Am Malala”. In this prologue she gives an account of 9th October 2012, the day on which the Talibans attacked her.
Malala was in Birmingham, England. She was taken there for her treatment and was forced to stay there for her own safety. She missed her country Pakistan. Though England is far more developed and all the modern equipments are readily available, the snow-topped mountains, green waving fields and the fresh blue rivers of Pakistan gave her more happiness and peace.
Malala did her schooling in Khushal School, which was founded by her father even before she was born. The school was in the midst of a busy street, but still it gives no hints to the passer-by of what lies beyond the gate, mainly for the Talibans. The door of the school was like a magical entrance for the girls. Malala has won several prizes in school and her room is filled with cups and trophies.
Initially she used to go to school by walk. But because of the threats they received, her mother insisted her to go by bus. So she went to school in an autorickshaw and returned home by the school bus. Malal too enjoyed the bys journey. She chatted with her friends and enjoyed the crazy stories of the bus driver Usman Ali. She and her best friend, Moniba used to share everything during their bus journey.
Malala’s mother was worried about her but Malala was worried about her father. Malala knew that the Taliban had never come for a girl, so she was more concerned about her father. Her father’s close friend and fellow campaigner, Zahid Khan was shot in the face while he was on his way to prayers. This made Malala worry about her father more, she used to day dream often and she day dreams about what she might do if a terrorist attacks her, she thought that she might him with her shoes but then she thought that if she did so then there would be no difference between her and the terrorist. So she thought that she might plead to him and explain to him the importance of women’s education.
On October 9, 2012 when she was returning in the school van, a man stopped the van, almost two meters away from the checkpoint. The man asked the details of the children in the van and the driver directed him to get the information from the office. Moniba told Malala that the man should be a journalist and he had come to interview Malala. But Malala felt something strange. Another young man approached the back of the van. He was wearing a peaked cap and he head a handkerchief over his nose and mouth, he demanded who Malala was. Although no one said anything several of the girls looked at her. The man shot her three times. The first bullet went through her left eye socket and injured her shoulder too. The other two bullets hit the girls next to her
Thus the prologue gave an account of Malala Yousafzai, the 15 year old girl from Pakistan’s Swat Valley. Malala the youngest Nobel Peace Prize Winner stood up against the terrorist and supported Women’s Education in spite of the threat to her own life.
