Agni - Subramania Bharathiyar

  Subramania Bharathiyar, also known as Subramania Bharati, was a Tamil author, poet, journalist, Indian independence activist, social reformer and polyglot born on the 11th of December 1882. Acting as the pioneer of modern Tamil poetry, Subramania Bharati was given the title of “Mahakavi Bharati”, which means the Great Poet Bharathi. The Tamil poet is best known for his works in the field of emancipation of women, standing against child marriage, reforming Brahminism and religion and his excellent literary works surrounding the idea of patriotism for India and the independence movement against the British Empire. Bharathiyar translated his own poetry collection under the title “Agni and Other Poems and Translations” in 1977. Thirukkural-The Glorification of Righteousness-V.V.S.Aiyar

  Varahaneri Venkatesa Subramaniam Aiyar also known as V. V. S. Aiyar was an Indian revolutionary from Trichurapalli, Tamilnadu. He fought against British Colonial Rule in India. He was also a Tamil writer and is considered as the father of modern Tamil short story. He translated the  Ramavatharam  of Kambar   and Thirukkural int o English.             V. V. S. Aiyar translated the entire work of the Thirukkural text in English prose, which became the first complete English translation by a native scholar. The Possession of Love(Anbudamai)-Thirukkural

  George Uglow Pope   or G. U. Pope was an Anglican Christian Missionary and Tamil Scholar who spent 40 years in Tamilnadu and translated many Tamil texts into English. His popular translations included those of the Tirukkural and Thiruvasagam. Born in Canada, he chose teaching as his profession. His statue can be found in the Chennai beach as a recognition for his contribution to the understanding and promotion of the Tamil language.   G. U. Pope translated Tirukkural on 1886. His translation contains an introduction, grammar, translation, notes, lexicon and concordance. It also includes the English translation of F. W. Ellis and the Latin translation of Constanzo Beschi.   “Possession of Love” (Anbudami) is the 8 th chapter of the first part of Tirukkural which focuses on Ethical Code of Conduct(Arathupal).
